Dyslexia Practitioner Certification

A major part of the Children’s Dyslexia Centers’ mission is to train teachers how to work with children who have characteristics of dyslexia through certification in the Orton-Gillingham based Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) Approach to Reading.

This Orton-Gillingham based MSLE training program is nationally accredited by the International Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). Completion of all program requirements leads to certification as a Dyslexia Practitioner 1.

Becoming a certified practitioner takes approximately one year of working with two students at the Center, during which time tutors are considered volunteers as they complete the required 60 hours of classroom training, 100 hours of practicum training, and 10 hours of observation.

Since opening our doors in 1997 these individuals have included educators from a variety of backgrounds including, both regular and special education teachers, speech therapists, school psychologists, school social workers, retired teachers, and parents of grown children diagnosed with dyslexia who experienced related difficulties while in school.
